What Photo Does a Portrait Tattoo Need?

A portrait tattoo is a translation: a photo becomes black, shades of grey and skin. Whatever is missing in the photo will be missing on the skin later. That makes the reference the most important decision you take before you enquire. Here is what matters.

Why the reference decides the result

For a photorealistic portrait the artist does not work from memory but from the picture. Eyes, highlights, skin texture, the transition from cheek to shadow: all of it has to be visible in the photo so it can be tattooed. A blurry or flat image leaves room for guesswork, and with a face guesswork quickly means: it looks similar, but not like the person.

That is why we tell you honestly beforehand whether a photo works for a portrait tattoo. Better to look for one more picture than to end up with a portrait that does not convince once healed.

Sharpness and resolution

The basic rule: the sharper and better the photo, the more detail can go into the tattoo. The face should be large enough in the frame that eyes, lashes and skin texture stay clear when you zoom in.

Send us the original file wherever possible, not a screenshot or an image that has been forwarded several times. Every forward through a messenger shrinks the picture, and what is lost there cannot be recovered later.

Light and shadow

A black and grey portrait lives on contrast. The photo therefore needs clear light with visible shadows: a lit side, a shaded side, defined shapes at the nose, cheeks and chin. Soft daylight from the side is usually ideal.

Photos taken with direct flash are less suitable. Flash flattens the face, the shadows disappear, and without shadows the tattoo has no depth. Heavy filters are a problem too: they smooth the skin and shift the brightness until the real structure is gone.

What usually does not work

• Snapshots from a distance where the face is only a small part of the image
• Photos with heavy filters or beauty mode
• Shots with direct flash and flat light
• Blurry or shaky pictures
• Group photos from which a face would have to be cut out
• Old pictures photographed several times over, without an original file

For memorial portraits there are often only a few pictures, and not every one is perfect. In that case send us everything you have. Sometimes a second photo can serve as a reference for details; sometimes we have to say honestly that the material is not enough.

Size and placement

A face needs room for eyes, highlights and fine transitions. As a rule of thumb: at least the size of a hand, and larger if the likeness is to last. Portraits that are too small lose their fineness after healing, because skin changes over the years and small details run together.

We choose size and placement together so that expression, light and shadow have their full effect. A single hand-sized portrait is usually one session of five to six hours. Portraits with surroundings, sleeves or back pieces take several sessions.

We look at the images and tell you which one works and what is good or difficult about it. If you are not from Hamburg, this can also be done by video consultation.

The design is created shortly before or on the day of the appointment, and you see it before we start. A portrait can hardly be changed afterwards, which is why we match reference and design so carefully in advance.
