Basketball has been with me for as long as I can remember. The NBA generation from the early 2000s to about 2020 shaped me like almost nothing else, and at some point I wanted to dedicate a picture to it. The composition follows Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper": anyone who sees the picture should immediately sense what it refers to. And I wanted to provoke a little.
To me personally, LeBron James is the greatest. Still, Michael Jordan sits in the middle because he revolutionised basketball. LeBron sits next to him as Judas because he wants the throne, and on the other side is Kobe Bryant, a seat that has carried a different weight since his death.
The 13 people are my personal choice, each of them shaped my years as a fan. And there are details everywhere: the money in Shaq's Nike box, the AND1 sneakers on the table, the Louis Vuitton bag. If you keep looking, you keep finding something new.
I drew everything by hand with charcoal pencils on 100 × 60 centimetres, for a whole year in the gaps, around 135 hours in total: in the morning before the first client, on days off and at weekends. For me it was the biggest drawing challenge up to then and pure meditation at the same time.
