Micro realism brings realism to a small surface. A pet, a flower, a childhood teddy – as detailed as a photo, yet barely bigger than your palm. Instead of hard outlines, the motif is built from fine shading and soft transitions. That is what makes the style demanding: on just a few centimetres every shade of grey has to be right, so the motif stays recognisable for years.

At our tattoo studio in Hamburg, Laura and Anna tattoo this style. Laura comes from black & grey realism and brings its shading technique to the small format. Anna likes to combine micro realism with fineline and floral elements, often in a single piece.

What you should know about micro realism

Small has a limit. Realistic detail needs room, otherwise it blurs together over the years. We tell you the size at which your motif stays readable for good.

The reference matters. For a pet or a keepsake we need a sharp, well-lit photo. What the photo doesn't show, we can't tattoo either.

Contrast is planned, not luck. Fine shading softens a little over time – that happens with every tattoo. That is why we plan light and dark areas deliberately from the start.

Common questions about micro realism

What is the difference between micro realism and fineline?
Fineline works with lines: outlines, vines, lettering, lots of open skin. Micro realism works with shading: the motif is built from tones and transitions without hard outlines – like a small photo on the skin. The two can be combined, for example a realistic animal with a fine floral vine.
How small can a micro realism tattoo be?
Small enough that the details still have room. An animal face needs more space than a single flower. Send us your motif and the size you have in mind. We will tell you honestly whether it stays readable long-term and otherwise suggest a size that works.
Can I get my pet as a micro realism tattoo?
Yes, it is one of the most common requests. What matters is a sharp photo in good light where the eyes and fur are clearly visible. Feel free to send several photos and we will pick the best one together.
Does a micro realism tattoo last?
Yes, if size and contrast are right. Fine shading softens a little over the years, as with every tattoo. That is why we build in enough contrast and advise against motifs that are too small. Good aftercare in the first weeks and sun protection afterwards help it stay that way.
